They also learn that floors were sometimes dug below ground level to help keep out draughts.

At one end of the building, families could keep their animals in a barn area, protecting them from thieves and cold winter weather. Crops could also be stored here. 🐄🌾

With no chimneys or windows, Viking longhouses could become very smoky, and the fire would be kept burning constantly.
